Robotic-assisted surgery

Mr Hunter is a specialist in robotic-assisted joint replacement using the cutting-edge Stryker Mako robot. He performs hip replacement and full/partial knee replacements at the Nuffield Chester Grosvenor Hospital.

Mako personalises a patient's surgery by utilising:

  • Pre-operative planning: A pre-operative CT scan creates a 3D model of the patient's anatomy. This allows for for precise planning and the ability to identify optimal implant size and position.

  • Intraoperative assistance: The robotic arm is guided to perform the pre-planned procedure. Mako provides real-time data and feedback, allowing for precise cuts and adjustments. Haptic feedback means that only the planned areas are cut, preserving bone and minimising the risk to soft tissues.

Benefits of robotic-assisted joint replacement:

  • Improved outcomes: Patients often experience less pain and have a faster recovery.

  • Preservation of healthy tissue: Improved accuracy results in preservation of healthy bone and soft tissues which in turn gives a more natural feeling.

  • Long-term durability: Improved alignment and fit of an implant contributes to joint replacement longevity.
